This morning, I was really down on myself because I was thinking about the
mess I made of life so far. so much so that I admittedly had thoughts that
maybe this life was not worth living. I started comparing my life to other
high school classmates. Some had nice Jobs and family. As for me, I'm 29
with no sense of direction and can't seem to keep a decent relationship.
Most of you can probably attest to my life being a mess. For the record,
Let me just say that I would NOT take my own life. I know the agreement
that The holy spirit and I have with one another but sometimes home
seems tempting. Don't act like you never thought it. it's too close to Easter
and the last thing you want on your conscious is Jesus rising from the dead
and first thing he hears is your lies. Anyway, Then a friend of mine mind
brought this poem to my attention tonight. it put a lot of things in
perspective. you just never know who's suffering out there, some worse
than I. I read it and thought of the many people, I know and love that
suffered throughout the years. The name of the poem is Richard Cory. By
Edwin Arlington Robinson who knew a grade school poem could be so real.
Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.
And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
'Good-morning,' and he glittered when he walked.
And he was rich - yes, richer than a king -
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.
So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head
Wow! This poem makes me very sad! Very powerful though! Call me if you want to hear the story of why this poem makes me sad, it is a memory that broke my heart when I heard it. This poem makes me greatful to be alive, and I will do my best for my friends family and all the people that I love to make sure they never feel so alone that putting a bullet through their head is their only option for making their life better. I want to do all I can to make them understand I am here for them, and I will do my best to bring all the love,positive light, and positivity to their lives I can possibly bring them! Thank you for sharing this poem with all of us! Your friend was right, this poem really makes you think.
I've loved this poem ever since I was introduced to it in the sixties.
By the way, Simon and Garfunkle had a song based on Robinson's poem, also called Richard Corey. But, I like the poem much better.
Thanks for posting it.

I've never heard this one before. But it just goes to show you can't know the mind or the heart of those you don't get to know. And a smile can hide a thousand sorrows.
